The malware that secretly installs apps and spies on the browsing habits of victims has infected millions of phones across the globe with majority of those targeted in Asia specifically China, Indonesia, India and the Philippines.
According to a survey by security firms Checkpoint and Lookout, the malware dubbed HummingBad installs itself in a phones operating system and gives creators complete control of one’s mobile device. The malware generates fake clicks on online adverts making an estimated $300,000 a month for its creators, the study suggests.
Hummongbad malware is said to be common in devices that run on older versions of Android.
The BBC reports that, security updates for Android have closed more than 270 bugs so far.
