Beyoncé Releases Black Is King Visual Album, A Celebration Of Black Experience

The American pop star’s latest project is based on her 2019 project The Lion King: The Gift, she has accompanied the release with a video for ‘Already’ from last year’s project which features Major Lazer and Shatta Wale. The the feature-length visual album is currently streaming on Disney + and was features her husband Jay Z, her ex-Destiny Child band-mate Kelly Rowland and Lupita Nyong’o among other notable people.

Black Is King was written, directed and executive produced by Beyoncé Knowles-Carter herself, other directors on the project include: Blitz Bazawule, Pierre Debusschere, Emmanuel Adjei, Ibra Ake, Jake Nava, Kwasi Fordjour and Dikayl Rimmasch. The film which follows a young Black boy as he discovers his royal heritage was filmed on location in New York, Los Angeles, South Africa, parts of West Africa, London, and Belgium.

On her Instagram Beyonce says the 95-minute film is “meant to celebrate the breadth and beauty of Black ancestry.” she adds that “We are all in search of safety and light. Many of us want change. I believe that when Black people tell our own stories, we can shift the axis of the world and tell our REAL history of generational wealth and richness of soul that are not told in our history books.”
