More than 300 artists to perform at the 4-day festival at Uganda’s Nile Discovery Beach in Jinja September
This year’s MTN Nyege Nyege Festival edition continues with the festival’s tradition of showcasing some of the freshest acts from African underground and electrifying acts from around the world. This year’s fiesta draws artists from more than 30 countries and is expected, as the organizers predict ‘to be a breakthrough year’ for the international festival.
The festival will kick off on 6th to 9th September will also include artists under Nyege Nyege Tapes, the festival’s critically acclaimed associated label. The lineup will have a special focus on South Africa and Tanzania.
The SA artists will be headlined by Afrohouse MC Sho Madjozi, the Durban Gqom scene will come full force with Rude Boyz, Dominowe and Phatstoki and underground sgubhu producer Sleeping Buddah completes the list.
On the other front the Tanzanian lineup will feature the cream of the Singeli scene of Dar Es Salaam including the “God mother of Singeli” Rehema Tahiri for an exclusive performance, as well as rhythm heavy Jagwa Music troupe and Gogo multi-instrumentalist Msafiri Zawose.
Tuareg wedding band Etran de l’Air will leave Niger for the first time to perform at MTN Nyege Nyege.
Kenya will be represented by L’Orchestre Les Mangelepa, considered as one of the golden era of Kenyan Lingala. They will be complemented by a host of the most exciting new DJ’s and producers from Nairobi including Shrap artists AD Family, Dj Raph, DJ Coco em, and new female rap sensation Monski.
The hosts Uganda will showcase the best of their traditional musical heritage with musicians from over 15 tribal traditions, and a host of the most exciting producers and DJ’s from around the country including electro Kadodi producers from Mbale, Electro Acholi Dj’s from Gulu and a who’s who of Kampala’s electronic music scene. MTN Nyege Nyege will also feature a number of specially commissioned performances in preparation a month prior to the festival that will premiere at this year’s edition.
International acts include; 13 acts from this year’s SHAPE artist roster, -JASSS, Giant Swan, Tonoko Sauvage & Yamaneko. International lineup will also feature JLin, Dj Marcelle, Juliana Huxtable, Modern Institute, Errorsmith. Several Afro-Disaporan artists will be returning to the continent including Nkisi, Bonaventure from Congo DRC and Zimbabwean Mbira Queen Stella Chiweshe.
Two stages will host some of the greatest performances; The Dark Star venue will host performances from a world class line up of electronic music DJs while the Spirit of Uganda stage will showcase the best of traditional troupes. The organizers have also planned to expand the venue of the now popular event in Uganda, adding a dedicated riverside camping site.

Ahead of the September Festival, the Nyege Nyege Tapes label has also lined up a European Holiday Tour, a Summer affair featuring acts like Nihiloxica, DJ Kampire, Otim Alpha and Bamba Pana & Makavelli.
Nyege Nyege International Music Festival is organized and curated by the Boutiq Foundation, a community based organization in Kampala, Uganda that aims to develop the local arts and culture industry by creating conducive platforms and opportunities for upcoming talented artists. The festival aims to connect underground musicians from around the continent with one another and with producers and musicians working with African music outside the continent.
