Going platinum in America will be as easy as a click on your mouse, thanks to the music streaming platforms and the new formula developed by the Recording Industry Association of America(RIAA).
According to RIAA streaming will now count toward the Gold or Platinum status.
The RIAA formula states that 1,500 audio or video streams equates ten track sales or one physical album sale.
Not so long ago, Gold status was awarded after 500,000 sales and platinum achieved after One million album sales. However, even with these parameters, the RIAA could not acurately track these album sales.
At least 17 albums have ‘benefited’ from the new metric, they include; Kendrick Lamar’s ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’-Platinum, Alt-J’s ‘An Awsome Wave’-Gold, Bean Sean ‘Dark Sky’ and Rihanna’s ‘Anti’-Platinum. Some of the albums achieved their status days or hours after release.
The big question is; how will the RIAA workout instances where songs have the highest streams on unofficial channels?
